There were many regular meetings on Hunwick Moor, Hunwick Edge and Auckland Edge in the early years of the 18th century, although the exact location of the racecourse at any of the 3 separate locations is unclear, but all newspapers of the day mention the ‘usual 4-mile course’. In particular there are records of meetings from Monday 8th to Wednesday 10th May 1721; Friday 28th September 1722; Wednesday 27th to Friday 29th April 1724; Monday 10th to Thursday 13th May 1725; Tuesday 2nd to Saturday 6th July 1728; Tuesday 23rd to Friday 26th September 1729, and Tuesday 5th June 1739. What is interesting is that some of these 4 or 5 day meetings were held on both Hunwick Moor and Auckland Edge, alternating between the two courses during the week. |

Racing continued throughout the late 1700’s and by the early 1800’s its popularity was waning. The course finally closed in 1816 and the Railway Station was built on the land. |
An attempt was made in 1862 to revive racing in the town and a meeting did take place, but by 1863 racing in Bishop Auckland ceased on Tuesday 12th May 1863. |
Course today | The course finally closed in 1816 and the Railway Station was built on the land, although racing was revived briefly in 1863. |
